Ceiling outlets in ducted evaporative cooling systems can contribute to significant heat loss during colder months. Warm air can escape not only around the edges of the outlets but also through the louvres and into the ductwork. While louvres can be manually closed after the summer season, they often do not provide a sufficient seal to prevent heat loss during winter.

  • Prioritize Safety: If your home has internal gas appliances, ensure that any work done does not interfere with necessary ventilation. Proper ventilation is crucial for safely expelling combustion products from the home.

  • Sealing the Outlet: To prevent air leakage, consider using commercially available covers that can be placed over the ceiling outlets of your evaporative cooling system. These covers should be applied during winter to block air from escaping through the louvres. Additionally, covering roof-mounted evaporative coolers when they’re not in use can further reduce heat loss.
  • Make sure to select covers that are specifically designed to fit your ceiling outlets. In some cases, applying a caulking compound around the edges of the outlet can help create a tighter seal, ensuring better insulation.
